According to History.com, the Fourth of July, or Independence Day, has been an American federal holiday since 1941, but the tradition of celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. Fourth of July celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This signified the beginning of American independence and is celebrated each year with festivities, such as fireworks, parades and barbecues.
